SAFER
FOOD, BETTER BUSINESS: Changes
in aw
Do
you know that the food Law is changing?
From 1 January 2006, food businesses must
have a written Food Safety Management
System. The Food Standards Agency has
developed a pack called Safer Food, Better
Business, which will help you comply with
the Law. Using this pack will save you
having to write your own system. It is
jargon free - and easy to use.

WEAKNESS: Vitamin
D deficiency link
Source:
The Guardian
James
Meikle in the Guardian reports on a study
conducted at Southampton general hospital
that has found evidence of bone weakness
in children whose mothers had low levels
of vitamin D. The research, published
in the Lancet, said that pregnant women
who had taken supplements or were exposed
to higher levels of sunlight were less
likely to be short of the vitamin D, calling
for trials on giving supplements to pregnant
women. The Royal College of Obstetricians
and Gynaecologists however warned that
pregnant women should not take extra vitamin
D unless advised to do so by their doctor.

TURKEY
BIRD FLU: officials
sent to deaths site
Source:
Financial Times
It is reported that Turkey has sent additional
resources and personnel to areas in the
East of the country stricken by bird flu
following the deaths of two children in
a suspected outbreak of H5N1, the deadliest
form of the disease. In the UK, the government
has said that four million doses of anti-flu
treatment have been stockpiled, with the
reserve growing by 800,000 doses a month.
A health spokesman in the UK said there
was no cause for alarm and that the level
of risk had not changed as there was no
human-to-human transmission involved in
the two cases.

MENINGITIS
MILK: Baby
milk firms 'failing to warn' of risk
Source: Daily Mail
Tom Kelly of the Daily Mail reports that
companies that make powered baby milk
have been accused of failing to warn parents
of a potentially fatal bug that can cause
meningitis. Several babies in Europe and
the US have died after drinking milk contaminated
with the bacteria enterobacter sakazakii.
The bacteria, which can spark meningitis
or severe gut infections, can be destroyed
by mixing powered milk with water heated
to at least 70C however this advice is
not printed on powdered milk cans or cartons.
Patti Rundall of Baby Milk Action said
"It's nearly four years since this
specific problem came to public attention
with the case of a five-year-old baby
in Belgium in march 2002", expressing
her shock that manufacturers have still
failed to tackle the problem.
